Early Life and Amateur Career
Alex Morgan was born on July 2, 1989 in Diamond Bar, California. She excelled in multiple sports from a young age but eventually chose to focus her athletic talents on soccer. As a high school player at Diamond Bar High, she earned All-American honors and shattered school records for goals scored.
Morgan went on play NCAA soccer at UC Berkeley where she helped lead the Golden Bears to a national championship in 2008. Her 45 collegiate goals ranks third all-time for California. She also set a school record with 17 game-winning goals, showcasing her knack for clutch performances.
Breakout Professional Success
The Western New York Flash picked Morgan first overall in the 2011 WPS draft, kickstarting her professional career. In her debut season, she scored 4 goals and helped the Flash win the regular season title. Later that year, Morgan was the youngest member of the U.S. team that made it to the 2011 World Cup final.
Morgan cemented her international stardom during the 2012 London Olympics, scoring the decisive goal in the semis and recording a record 4 assists. She took home the gold and her brilliant playmaking ability earned her the 2012 U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year.
