Early Life and Comedy Beginnings
As a fan who‘s followed Howie Mandel‘s career since his stand-up days in Toronto, it‘s been incredible to watch his rise to fame. Born in 1955 and growing up in Canada, Mandel faced health problems early on when he was born with a congenital heart defect. Thankfully he recovered after open heart surgery as an infant.
Mandel had a natural talent for comedy and impersonations. In the 1970s, he started spending his weekends on stage at Toronto clubs like Yuk Yuk’s. His impressions of celebrities like Michael Jackson were hilarious crowd-pleasers.
By 1979, Mandel had auditioned for the comedy game show “Make Me Laugh” and started making regular appearances. It was amazing getting to see him showcase his humor and energy on TV for the first time!
Big Breaks in Comedy and Acting
Once Mandel became a regular guest on Johnny Carson‘s “The Tonight Show,” his fame skyrocketed. He released several popular comedy albums in the 80s that I wore out from re-listening!
In 1982, Mandel landed his first major acting role as Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the hit medical series “St. Elsewhere.” He brought so much humor and heart to that character for the show‘s entire six seasons.
Mandel was absolutely electric during his 80s stand-up performances. I was lucky enough to catch his 1987 Showtime special “Howie Mandel: An Evening at Carnegie Hall” and it remains one of the funniest live shows I’ve ever seen.
Hosting Game Shows and TV Success
A huge fan of "Deal or No Deal" here – it was awesome getting to watch Howie Mandel use his high energy and quick wit to host such an exciting game show. The way he kept audiences laughing and engaged made that show a phenomenal success.
I‘m so glad Mandel has continued finding TV success with hosting gigs on “America’s Got Talent” and “Mobbed.” No matter what show he’s on, his hilarious antics and showmanship shine through. He just has an incredible natural gift for entertaining.
Having followed Mandel‘s career for so long, I’m continuously impressed by his versatility as a performer. From stand-up comedy, to acting, to hosting – he really can do it all with seemingly endless energy and charm!
Charity Work and Inspiring Others
On top of being super talented and fun, it‘s clear Mandel has a genuinely good heart. His charity work with Operation Smile and advocating for mental health by opening up about his own OCD and ADHD is so inspiring.
He uses his platform to bring joy to others and help important causes. Howie Mandel is truly one of the greats in comedy and entertainment. I can‘t wait to continue following his career for many more years to come!
