Sophia Amoruso is an American businesswoman and author, best known for founding the fashion retailer Nasty Gal and writing the incredible book #Girlboss that inspired women worldwide. I‘ve been a huge fan of Sophia for years and deeply admire her unique story.

Early Life

Sophia had a challenging childhood, moving between various homes and getting expelled from high school. As a rebellious teenager, she hitchhiked up and down the West Coast, dumpster diving for food and occasionally shoplifting. After earning her GED, she briefly attended community college but dropped out after one semester.

To earn money, Sophia started selling vintage finds on eBay using the handle "Nasty Gal Vintage". This hustle eventually spawned her incredibly successful company.

Founding Nasty Gal

At just 22 years old in 2006, Sophia launched the Nasty Gal Vintage eBay shop. She expertly curated cool vintage fashion herself and modeled the items in clever listings. The store quickly gained a cult following among hip young women who loved its distinctive vibe.

Within just 4 unbelievable years, Sophia grew Nasty Gal into a multi-million dollar brand. She launched the NastyGal.com website in 2010, and leveraged social media brilliantly to market her styles. By 2012, Nasty Gal hit over $100 million in sales! Sophia‘s visionary leadership took her scrappy start-up to being a fashion powerhouse in just 6 years – a truly rare accomplishment.

#Girlboss Book & Media

In 2014, Sophia released her first book #Girlboss, chronicling her journey from thrift shoplifter to CEO of a fashion empire. It instantly became a New York Times bestseller and manifesto for ambitious young women.

On the heels of the book‘s success, she launched #Girlboss Media in 2017. It provides inspiration, community and content for working women. The book was also adapted into the Netflix series Girlboss starring Britt Robertson.

Leaving Nasty Gal & The Future

In 2015, Sophia stepped down as Nasty Gal‘s CEO to become Executive Chairwoman, before leaving the company entirely in 2017. Despite Nasty Gal‘s bankruptcy after she left, Sophia continues empowering female entrepreneurs through her Girlboss Foundation grants, speaking engagements and startup investments.

At just 39 years old, Sophia has already led an extraordinary career. Her resilience and bold vision brought her from poverty to the cover of Forbes. Sophia remains one of the most inspirational female entrepreneurs today. I can‘t wait to see what trailblazing projects she takes on next!
