Pixels Per Inch (PPI)

PPI measures pixel density by calculating how many pixels fit per inch on a given display. Since UHD and 4K quadruple horizontal/vertical resolution over 1080p, they pack far more pixels into the same screen size:

1080p Display PPI

  • 32-inch screen = ~69 PPI

4K UHD Display PPI

  • 32-inch screen = ~137 PPI

With over twice the concentration of pixels, visual elements appear dramatically sharper and crisper. Fine details avoid blurring together, especially with larger screen sizes.

In the ppi measure of visual fidelity, 4K marks a major leap over 1080p. And future 8K/16K UHD resolutions will only push clarity even farther once adopted.

Chroma Subsampling

Related to resolution, chroma subsampling defines how much color data gets encoded relative to luma (brightness) data.

Lower quality encoding drops more chroma content, discarding color information. Higher quality keeps luminance and color detail more evenly matched.

Again, 4K and UHD formats shine:

1080p video compression begins dropping chroma at 4:2:0 subsampling
4K Standard retains more balanced 4:2:2 subsampling
UHD Spec allows full 4:4:4 subsampling

So those pixels carry more accurate color for improved realism alongside the sharply defined brightness.

Fewer Banding and Contouring Artifacts

Banding refers to visible stripes of color gradients in areas intended to seamlessly fade from darker to brighter regions. It stems from lack of available colors and/or transitions to depict subtle shading nuances.

1080p‘s limited color palette and coarse brightness steps often band in shadow gradients and skies. But with over 8 million more pixels, 4K and UHD minimize banding through increased gradations.

There‘s simply more pixel-level room to render clean, smooth color and luminosity transitions side-by-side. You get the intended effect instead of distracting banding quirks.

Similar contouring artifacts also diminish at higher resolutions when color and brightness can update more granularly per-pixel rather than spanning messy blobs.
