Her Early Life
Maya was born on August 14, 1994 in Bristol, England. Her mother Sadie was just 17 years old when she had Maya. Growing up, Maya has been open about the financial struggles her single mom faced. But Sadie worked hard to provide and encouraged Maya‘s interests in performing. As a kid, Maya landed roles in various commercials and took dance and acting classes.
At Cotham School, Maya excelled in her academics. She became interested in broadcasting after landing a role on local Bristol radio station Ujima Radio when she was just 14!
Launching Her Broadcasting Career
Maya‘s broadcasting career really took off when she moved to London at 16. She got small acting gigs but ultimately decided presenting was her real passion. In 2012, she got her first big break hosting MTV‘s coverage of music festivals. This allowed her to interview major artists backstage and get comfortable on camera.
Her talents were noticed by BBC Radio 1 after she hosted MTV segments. In 2015, she hosted a weekly show on Radio 1 – a huge accomplishment! More TV hosting jobs came rolling in. From 2016-2018, she won over audiences as host of the ultra popular reality show The Circle on Channel 4.
But in 2020, Maya reached a new level of fame when she took over hosting Love Island from Caroline Flack. Love Island is one of the most high-profile hosting gigs in the UK, and Maya has made the role her own with her magnetic personality.
Maya‘s Other Projects
Aside from her TV and radio work, Maya has expanded her brand as an influencer, designer, and entrepreneur. She launched clothing collections with PrettyLittleThing and Asos that reflect her unique sense of style.
During the pandemic in 2020, Maya created her own line of face masks called MIJ Masks. She donated proceeds to charity and helped address the nationwide mask shortage.
Maya also co-hosts a popular soccer podcast called Matchday Vibes. As a female voice in the male-dominated sports world, she brings a fresh perspective.
She even found time to launch her own makeup line In The Style Beauty in 2022! The vegan and cruelty-free products have been a huge hit.
