Even as the frontman for prog-rockers Genesis from 1967–1975, Gabriel‘s creative restlessness was evident. When his ambitious concepts for the band‘s 1974 album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway were restrained, Gabriel left Genesis to fully pursue his iconoclastic musical vision. His early solo work expanded on his art-rock foundations while exhibiting forays into punk, funk and global influences. He embraced novel technologies to craft sounds never-before-heard in rock. Renowned for his riveting live shows, Gabriel gave physical form to his songs through transformative costumes and avant-garde visuals.

Gabriel‘s fifth album So spawned an unprecedented 5 top 5 singles on the Billboard charts including the groundbreaking #1 hit "Sledgehammer." Its music video won a record 9 MTV Music Video Awards. The album‘s success established Gabriel‘s commercial clout to match his critical acclaim. Yet through the decades, he continues to follow his muse – whether crafting ever-evolving new material, or launching projects supporting world music and new media artists through his Real World label and studios.

“My pleasure comes from breaking down barriers and the restrictions that one genre of music puts on another.” – Peter Gabriel

The Activist: A Champion for Justice

Gabriel has parlayed his renown into tangible change. His 1980 song "Biko" was among the first pop culture condemnations of apartheid in South Africa, bringing global attention to the cause. In 1997, Gabriel‘s efforts helped launch the HIV/AIDS prevention group The Red Hot Organization. He has raised funds and awareness for initiatives supporting refugees, homelessness, environmentalism and more. Gabriel‘s non-profit WITNESS trains human rights activists worldwide to expose abuses through video.

I vividly recall when Nelson Mandela chose Gabriel‘s iconic song "Biko" as the soundtrack to his first appearance after being freed in 1990. When he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002, Gabriel had definitively cemented his status as both artist and activist.

“It seems to me that the best way to help out is to try to get people to act on the basis of what their consciences tell them.” – Peter Gabriel

The Legacy: An Enduring Source of Inspiration

With global record sales exceeding 17 million, Gabriel has won accolade after accolade including multiple BRIT and Grammy Awards. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both for his Genesis work and as a solo artist – one of only a handful to be recognized twice.

Yet his artistic influence remains his most enduring legacy. Musicians from Bono to Tori Amos to Coldplay have cited Gabriel as instrumental in shaping their own musical identities. His fusion of styles created the “worldbeat” genre, opening Western mainstream music to new global perspectives. From stage theatrics to socially-conscious lyrics, many elements of live rock performance we now take for granted originated with innovations by Peter Gabriel.

Now in his 70s, Gabriel continues to release new music and tour the world. His body of work and tireless activism have already secured his place in the pantheon of rock music greats. Yet Gabriel remains driven by the same restless creative spirit that has defined his long career. After all these years, the man and his music remain as vital as ever – still breaking molds, pushing boundaries and inspiring fans like myself around the globe.
