Chase Stokes has quickly become one of the most buzzed-about young actors in Hollywood thanks to his breakout role on Netflix‘s hit teen drama Outer Banks. As the show‘s leading man, Chase brings charm, charisma, and complexity to the character of John B. But there‘s much more to this rising star beyond his on-screen persona.
Early Life and Background
Born in Annapolis, Maryland to Jennifer Canning and John Stokes, Chase spent most of his childhood in the beach town of Timber Creek, Florida. He has one younger brother named Kaden.
From a young age, Chase was highly energetic and drawn to performing. He landed his first commercial for Kellogg‘s at age 5 and went on to do community theatre, taking part in productions like A Christmas Carol, White Christmas, and Peter Pan.
After graduating from Timber Creek High School in 2010, Chase attended Valencia College in Orlando while continuing to act in local theatre. During this time, he also worked as a lifeguard at Orlando Watersports Complex and as a stunt performer at Universal Studios Florida.
Career Beginnings
Before his big breakout, Chase played minor roles in several popular TV shows in 2016-2018. He made brief appearances in Stranger Things (2016), Daytime Divas (2017), The First (2018), and The Beach House (2018).
His first recurring TV role was as Adam in the Facebook Watch series Turnt in 2018. That same year, he was cast as Reed in the YouTube Premium high school drama Base.
These early acting jobs allowed Chase to hone his craft in front of the camera. But little did he know, his career was about to skyrocket with his next major role.
Rise to Fame in Outer Banks
In 2019, Chase landed the lead role of John B in Netflix‘s new mystery teen drama Outer Banks. As the charismatic leader of the working-class Pogues searching for lost gold along the coast of North Carolina, Chase received widespread praise for his star-making performance.
Outer Banks became one of Netflix‘s top 10 most popular series of 2020. As the show‘s breakout star, Chase earned nominations at the MTV Movie & TV Awards for Breakthrough Performance and the People‘s Choice Awards for Drama TV Star of 2020.
Chase now has over 7 million Instagram followers and uses his platform to speak out on causes like Black Lives Matter, mental health awareness, and hurricane relief.
Thanks to his success, Chase appeared on magazine covers like Cosmopolitan, Men‘s Health, and Flaunt. He also became an ambassador for Virginia Tourism and the mental health app Calm.
Upcoming Projects
Following the success of Outer Banks, Chase is now positioned for major Hollywood stardom. He has two exciting feature films in the works:
- Strangers – Chase will star alongside Maika Monroe, Avan Jogia, and Isabel May in this Netflix thriller.
- Fantasy Island – A remake of the classic ‘70s TV series in which Chase plays a guest looking to fulfill his fantasy on a tropical island resort.
Chase also wrapped filming for season 2 of Outer Banks, set to premiere in 2022 on Netflix. At just 30 years old, his future in film and television looks incredibly promising. With his charismatic on-screen presence, versatility, and work ethic, there is no limit to how far his talent can take him.
